8/14/11 Day 9- Flaming Gorge Reservoir and Dam. The loop around the gorge was about 200 miles and was full of varying scenery. As you can tell the forecast for 90 degrees ended up being 60 and rain for the first half and high 80's for the second half. We are remembering from last year all the interesting weather patterns that happen when you get out of Washington! Obviously a little rain doesn't phase us! A good chance to use the rain gear for the first time.
The Green River carves through the Uinta Mountains and makes a 91 mile reservoir flanked by the Flaming Gorge and Red canyons. Our geology history was challenged by the many rocks, cliffs, canyons, and exposed strata. Luckily they had really cool signs giving us the era (i.e. Pre-Jurrasic) and type of rock we were seeing!
Sheep Creek Lookout with Flaming Gorge in the background. We saw pronghorn antelope and deer but no sheep. This area was annexed to the U.S. after the Mexican War. John Wesley Powell mapped the area in the late 1860's.
